Remembering Gerry, a brother whose loving support, kindness, generosity, compassion, thoughtfulness, delightful sense of humour, intellect, courage and wisdom were a guidepost for me throughout life. He faced life's difficulties with a depth of maturity that transcended his years. Sooooo many memories flood my mind as I think of him as a child, teen, newly-married adult, father, son of aging and ill parents, brother ... and each memory reminds me how blessed I was to have Gerry in my life. He taught me a lot about life - about forgiveness - about compassion - about courage - about myself. Rest in peace, little brother. I am proud - and blessed - to be your sister. Rest in peace.

Dear Ria, Chris, and Tracy, We were sorry to hear about Gerry's passing. I'm so glad we got to see Gerry and Ria, and this past year, Tracy too, when you came to Florida in the winter over the past few years and with Chris too in previous years. As cousins, Tom often talked about the time the two families went to Nassau. Gerry must've been about 16 and Tom 12. They rented a scooter and Gerry drove fearlessly with Tom on the back all over the island. Tom loved Gerry and looked up to him. As teachers, they shared a great heart for people and a seemingly infinite capacity for having fun! We had a marvelous time with two great hosts at Viva Villa years ago when Chris was four and Tracy was a baby. All through the years it was obvious that Gerry was very proud of his two children and loved them dearly. Gerry lived life to the fullest, and he lives on. With much love, Elly, Tom Jr. and Mark

To Ria, Christopher and Tracy, I would like to offer my sincere condolences. I was greatly saddened by the news of Gerry’s (Mr. Mack) passing. He was a good teacher, a great mentor and a wonderful man. He has taught me a lot about physics and chemistry but also about living life to its fullest. As a student, I thought he was resourceful person with a vivid sense of humour. I could never get enough of his pranks, weather they were successful or not. I remember well our grade 13 trip to Toronto, all seven of us in his old Dodge pickup. I remember us walking down Young Street, pretending to be his children and calling him Dad. Strangely, he didn't seem to mind that. Through his love of teaching he has inspired several of his students to pursue a career in sciences and in education. I am so lucky to have known him.

Anybody who knew Gerry would know his special sense of humor! He loved to laugh, he loved having fun and he also loved playing tricks on us! At one certain parent/teacher's night, Gerry took it upon himself to play a trick on me. Because we do a lot of talking during those meetings, our throats get very dry, of course! Now back in the day (Gerry and I were colleagues from 1976 to 1999) when bottled water wasn't as popular as it is today, we (the teachers) would rely on students who were good enough to do the rounds from time to time to see if we wanted coffee or juice. You have to understand that at our school (French River DSS/École Rivière-des-Français in Noëlville), these parent/teacher interviews took place in the gym: each teacher had a small designated area to meet with the parents. The parents would stand in line, sometimes for quite a while, waiting their turn to meet with each of their children's teachers. Needless to say no teacher had the time nor dared make any parent wait while they went to get a coffee. So we relied on these good-hearted students who brought us a cup of coffee about half way through the evening. Low and behold Gerry (who for one reason or other was already finished meeting with his students' parents) managed to convince that poor innocent student who delivered my coffee that night to put a whole whack of salt in my cup instead of the usual sugar. My cup of coffee was delivered to me and I thanked the student profusely for being so kind. I had no idea! My throat was so dry, I couldn't wait to take a generous gulp of this wonderful coffee. So away I went. It didn't take long for my taste buds to realize what had taken place. Thank God it was the parent's turn to talk while all of this was happening. I immediately glanced in the direction of where the students hung out near the coffee maker just to notice 2 largely-smiling faces looking back at me...Gerry and his accomplice! I did swallow the salty solution, did I have a choice? I'm not sure if the parent noticed the funny face I made when swallowing or the "if looks could kill" glance I threw Gerry's way soon afterwards! Needless to say I didn't finish that cup of coffee but, I will never forget it! Thanks for the memories Gerry!

Everyone remembers a teacher that made a difference in their life. For so many of us who attended FRDSS Gerry was that teacher. I once told him in math class those old worn out words all teachers must hear a million times “I am never going to use this in real life”. I distinctly recall him saying that I would apologize for saying that one day. I never got the chance to tell him to his face but, I am sorry Mr. Mack – you were right…

21 years ago we had our first stay at Viva Villa, never imagining that we would meet wonderful folks like the Mack family. Our annual vacations there were filled with much fun, laughter and made extra special by our hosts at the camp, the Macks, who became dear friends. Our family and friends followed us to Viva Villa renting a few cottages over the years, always enjoying the company of Gerry & Ria who made it seem like home. So much so that in 2001 we became permanent neighbours across the creek from Viva Villa. We could never find better neighbours than Gerry & Ria. Gerry's special sense of humour was so endearing. Their generosity when Ken became ill five years ago went above and beyond what could adequately be described. So many fond memories, so much laughter. Gerry will be greatly missed by so many, many who had the privilege of knowing him. Ria, Tracy & Chris, you are in our thoughts & prayers, with our deepest sympathy. God bless you all at this difficult time. Gerry will always be with you, and as time heals, I know he will make you smile again in his special way. Hugs from Ken, Elaine, Kara, Derek & Family

Ria and Family, I am deeply saddened to hear of Gerry's passing. I first met Gerry when he joined the MHC Board of Directors back in 2005|2006. Over these past few years, we have shared in a lot of friendly bantering back and forth. I will always remember the day I went to pick up my mail in the business office and there was a small brown envelope postmarked from Kagawong. My co-workers were curious, so I opened up the envelope slowly, not knowing what to expext from Gerry. To their surprise and my delight, there was a homemade cookie. From that day on, I fondly referred to him as the Cookie Monster. My condolences to you all, Gerry will be dearly missed by those who had the pleasure to know him. Lori Mastelko
