Obituary of Robert Johnson

JOHNSON - Robert (Bob) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Mindemoya Hospital at the age of 94. He will be sadly missed by his wife Maureen, sons Clive (Marilyn), David (Kim) and daughter Tove (Jerry) Shere as well as grandchildren Sean (Rindi), Melissa, Tobin (Nana), and great grandchildren Kamber, Kaylee and Reese. Predeceased by parents Peter and Elizabeth (Close) and 5 sisters. Bob was educated in England and served as a machinist apprentice. He was a proud member of the Grenadier Guards Armoured Division (Tanks) and served in England, France, Holland and Germany from 1942-1947. Bob and Maureen married in 1949. They emigrated to Canada in 1957 and Bob worked as a teacher at the Boys' Training School in Bowmanville for eight years. More teaching positions followed in Peterborough, Clinton, Manitoulin Secondary School, and Opeongo High School in Eganville. Bob was interests were far and wide. In his early years he competed in many athletic events specializing in hurdles, pole vault and high jump and enjoyed all athletics. Since 1976 he has been an avid participant in target archery and won the Masters Award in Windsor. Bob also enjoyed many years of snowmobiling and won several Island races. He loved all animals especially Labradors and had much success at field trials with his dogs. He also enjoyed hiking (he walked the whole south shore) and camping (especially winter camping with MSS students) and all outdoor activities. Bob was a frequent companion at his son's David snowmobile racing. Bob enjoyed travelling and over the years had seen most of Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, and the USA with Maureen who shared his enthusiasm, Bob was also a past member of the Gore Bay Masonic Lodge and an active member of the All Saints Anglican Church. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9pm on Sunday November 18, 2018 at the Simpson Funeral Home, Gore Bay. Funeral Service will take place 11am Monday November 19, 2018 at All Saints Anglican Church 30 Meredith St, Gore Bay. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary or All Saints Anglican Church may be made through www.simpsonfuneralhome.ca
